Hansi – Funky Grooves Vol 14 (Viking Grooves)

Hansi‘s awesome ‘Funky Grooves‘ EP series is one we always look forward to spotting a new volume of because you’re always guaranteed a classy selection of edits that often serve up music for those relaxing moments in life and those moments that require something with a bit more get-up-and-go to get stuff done.

On this occasion, there are three beautifully chilled tracks taking the first three slots on volume 14. The first of those see Hansi drop in reworked downbeat drums and then combine them with the rousing horns and soulful rasp of Charles Bradley from his track ‘Changes’ to great effect. Following on is a sublime re-edit of Timmy Thomas‘s stripped-back Bossa-Nove groove ‘Why Can’t We Live Together’. New drums are once again added but give just a subtle kick so as not to detract from Timmy’s smooth vocal and that soothing Lowrey organ.

Next in line is a cool, crisp and funky Breaks mashup of James Brown‘s classic ‘Papa Don’t Take No Mess’ and Run DMC‘s classic ‘Peter Piper’ and the result is a backyard-chiller to have spinning while you catch up with friends at long last! Bringing things to a close is the fiery one out of the four and this time Hansi lets loose and cranks up the funky groove of ‘It’s Just Begin’ by The Jimmy Castor Bunch. £2 gets you all four of the classy edits on offer and by my reckoning, that’s a bit of a bargain!
