Although Padcore is described as a label regular(s) on the awesome Katakana Edits, I’ve not been able to find out a single thing on who they might be, where they might be from or any history of any other music released, asides from what has appeared on Katakana Edits. One thing I can be sure of though and that is the music made by them is of the Funky Breaks variety and it’s very, very good, as the 4 tracks found demonstrate perfectly.
First up on this cracking EP is a stripped back edit of ‘Intergalactic’ that’s all about beats, a bit of brass and most of all, the Beastie‘s. Next up, Padcore takes a trip back to 1969 to put a spin on Viola Wills‘ stone-cold funker ‘Sweetback’ and if you thought the original was funky, wait till you hear this version! Following on is a smooth, sophisticated and soulful edit of Blues Magoos‘ 1967 garage/psych nugget ‘The People Had No Faces’ and bringing volume 85 to a close, we find another soulful gem, this time being a take on Esther Phillips‘ 1971 cover of Gil Scott-Heron‘s ‘Home Is Where The Hatred Is’.
