Ronny Hammond – Rollin’ With Special Ed (Don’t Know What It Is, But It Sure Is Funky)

Ronny Hammond rolls out another one his must-have free downloads and as always, it’s a multi-layered masterpiece that’s dripping with funk. The components parts used in his latest creation include Special Ed’s ‘I Got It Made’ but as is the way with Ronny, it’s not always that straight forward. Ronny has used the first verse from ‘I Got It Made’ but instead of simply sampling the original track, he sampled an interview Special Ed did many years ago where he performed the first verse live and thus gives it the rawness you hear. As well as sampling the first verse, Ronny also used excerpts from the interview in his track and then laid all that over Ripple’s 1973 classic ‘I Don’t Know What It Is, But It Sure Is Funky’ to crank up the funk and added in some bumpin’ beats so that the cool cats can do their thang on the floor.

I have to hold my hands up and give props to Ronny for the info above. With the music to listen to and the somewhat cryptic title, I had managed to join some of the dots, but with Ronny’s help all the dots were joined and the picture became clear so that we all now know what’s going down. If you’re still unsure what it is, it sure is funky!
