Top DJ Tips – Touch OSC for iPad and iPhone – By Mooqee (BombStrikes)

touchosc-11 Get ready to feel like a boss with this amazing midi controller app for tablets (iPad mini just £269 from Currys!). I mainly use Touch OSC as a DJ for controlling Serato Scratch live in tandem with two 1210s turn tables. I use a set of trigger buttons set up for the sampler, with a pan pot for volume on each trigger and a scroll to switch between sampler banks. I also use it to trigger ‘cue points’ when DJing.

The real fun came from using it to control the built in FX such as filters or phasers. By assigning different parameters to the ‘X and the Y’ (think Korg Kaos pad style!) it allows for some really cool multiple effects that would simply not be achievable on the dicers, laptop or on any other ‘fixed’ controller I’ve seen.

It’s fully customizable so puts an unbelievable amount of control at your fingertips. Choose from sliders, pan pots, triggers, X & Y pad and many more to control your synth plugin, virtual deck or workstation. If all that customization sounds daunting, the app also comes with controller templates for popular music tools such as Ableton Live and Logic.

Another great feature is that it connects to your computer using Wi-Fi so there’s no need to worry about adding another wire to your set up or making sure you have cables long enough. In fact you could jump around like a loon and still have control, if you’re that way inclined. The connection was rock solid and I didn’t notice any latency.

Overall I found it hard to fault the app and the new creative possibilities it opens up are mind-boggling. At £2.49 it’s also very reasonably priced and it looks pretty flash, too.

Value for Money: 5 / 5
Ease of Use: 4 / 5 – but a little ‘know how’ is needed
Features: 4 / 5
Overall: 4 / 5

Touch OSC is available on iPhone and iPad from the iTunes store.

Alternatively, Serato have release their own app for iPad which can also be obtained through iTunes priced at $19.99.
