Vintage Video Games #29 – Day of the Tentacle Remastered
Unless you have been hiding under a tentacle shaped stone the past few weeks, you have probably heard that DOTT has been remastered. As if the graphics weren’t good enough first time round, Double Fine Productions have taken on the painstaking task of redrawing the two-dimensional cartoon-style art, at higher resolution for modern technology. The player can switch back and forth between the original graphics and the high-resolution version. It is a real visual treat and of course with other Lucas Arts games, hysterically funny!
The game includes a more streamlined interaction menu, a command wheel and the game’s soundtrack has been redone. There is an option to listen to commentary from the original creators plus the remaster contains the fully playable version of the original Maniac Mansion, though no enhancements have been made to that game-within-a-game.
Personally, despite being only 12 when i played the original, i am about a third of the way through and i’m surprised at how much I remember! Maybe some of the puzzles are so bizarre they are engraved in my mind (Beauty contest anyone?!) … on the other hand i have items in my inventory which i don’t have a clue where/when they come in to play.
