Vintage Video Games #36 – Alex Kidd in Miracle World
An oldie but goldie from in the form of Alex Kidd. If you were lucky enough to own a Master System back in the day you will probably know this cheeky chappie. For a time before Sonic he was an unofficial mascot of the Sega Corp. Alex Kidd’s popularity was at a peak with the release of the first game in the series, Alex Kidd in Miracle World, in 1986, which was later built into the Master System console without need of a cartridge and was playable from purchase of the console. He appears as a short boy with large ears and slightly monkey-like features, a red and yellow jumpsuit, and oversized hands.
Plot: This game is set in a fantasy world called Miracle World. Here Alex Kidd is in search for his lost brother Prince Egle, who (together with Princess Lora) has been captured by the villainous Janken the Great, who then has taken over the peaceful land of Radaxian. Before Alex Kidd meets up with Janken the Great, he has to pass Janken’s three henchmen who performs the game “Rock, Paper, Scissors”.
Also, before Alex Kidd can continue to next stage, he must get into a hamburger. Or a Japanese rice food called “onigiri” if you have the original version of the game.
Top notch character design and and an all-round great, vintage platformer
