Vintage Video Games #37 – California Games

Welcome to California – The weather is hot, the people are beautiful and they like to play games! These games! Epyx’s breakthrough release is fun, timeless and annoyingly addictive.

Originally released for the Apple II and Commodore 64, this game was very lucrative for Epyx and was released for several other platforms over the years. It was eventually ported to Amiga, Apple IIGS, Atari 2600, Atari ST, Atari Lynx, DOS, Sega Mega Drive, Amstrad CPC, ZX Spectrum, Nintendo Entertainment System, MSX and Sega Master System.

With more than 300,000 copies sold in the first nine months California Games was the most-successful Epyx game

Plot:

Play your way through 6 different catagories: Half Pipe, Surfing, Foot bag, Skating, BMX, and Flying Disk. Playing This is enough to make even the most jaded couch potato want to put on a pair of rollerblades and hit the beach….

(Also: You know you’re in for a real treat, when you pop in an NES cart, and the first thing you hear is a chiptunes rendition of Louie Louie!)
