Vintage Video Games #4 – Cannon Fodder
Cannon Fodder is an action-strategy shoot ’em up game published by Virgin Interactive and developed by Sensible Software in 1993. ‘War Has Never Been So Much Fun’! This somewhat darkly humorous game launched on many platforms was critically acclaimed receiving over 90% in most gaming mags and Amiga Action said the game was “easily” the best of that year.
Plot: The player controls a small squad of up to five soldiers. The aim – to blow the enemy to smithereens! As well as foot soldiers, it also includes vehicles such as jeeps, tanks and helicopters as well as missile-armed turrets. Another task is to blow up adversary buildings which requires heavier fire power such as grenades and rockets. With 23 missions divided into several levels each making 72 levels in all, they are set in various locations: jungle, snow and desert each posing unique features such as igloos, quicksand and rivers. A rootin’ tootin’ shoot ’em up of the highest order!
Highlights: The very catchy theme tune and the satisfaction of making things explode…
