Luke Leadbelly & Mane’s ode to beat ’em up games ‘Earth Realm’ kicks off with a fusion of Grime & Footwork. The cut up stabs and booming bass give that disorientating vibe of watching the screen spin and turn as you play Tekken or the adrenaline rush of button bashing classics like Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat.

SELFHOOD ‘OHM BREAK’ flips spiritual chanting into a dark soundscape of rapid fire beats and speaker ripping bass not unlike early Bad Company/RAM Trilogy classics.

No Data Available ‘Hi Energy’ lets the 303 go on a tear with undertones of electro, techno and early 90s hardcore all rolled into a punchy floor filler.

Club Cab ‘Go Cowboys!’ straddles dark jungle tekno and juke with bleeps, menacing bass and Hip Hop bloc party call and response vocal samples.

Speed Gonzales ‘Shake That’ chops up US Rap vox into a blender of amen tearout that nods to 96/7 Jump Up DnB.

Mean E ‘AMEN 4 ACID’ offers meaty think breaks up with reverse FX from the golden era of Jungle. The track cleverly morphs into a bubbling 303 stomper driven by bumping kick drums in unison with the breaks.

Long time Footwork stalwart Terrorrythmus features with the angry Hardcore/Footwork Jungle of ‘Beat The System’, a hoover loaded rave missile that sounds a bit like Coco Bryce which is always a good thing!

Shawn Cartier ‘STABZ’ opens with haunting Techno strings. slamming kicks and acid with a T99 hoover midsection suited for the early hours or even the afters.

Next up is our pick of an excellent VA, Spaceface ‘Clamsmasher’, a potent, combustible explosion of Hardcore, B Boy Breaks, Ragga and the kitchen sink of rave sub genres bundled up in an Aphrodite style ferris wheel of a tune!!! You can listen to the premiere above.

Team GB ‘Pump That Bass’ on a track that combines rave urgency with the bombast of DnB. This one is an energy factory that sparkles like electricity sending a message through the brain receptors to get up and dance like a lunatic!

ERAM ‘When I Think About U’ bumps along Footwork style, fizzling with dark acid and an assortment of moans and whoops that exhume a steamy. trippy tension.

PARA ‘Back 2 da Dancefloor’ threads a sped up Ghetto House bassline with amen breaks and raw kick drums mashing up styles in a seamless fashion that is truly admirable and certainly works as a rave tool.

Luke’s Anger ‘Little Squirt’ goes on assault with high frequency bleeps and crunchy beats with a nod to artists like Justin Jay at plus 11.

Boris Donkson ‘Lots of Fuks’ is a quintesential Juke/Ghetto Bass chugger with plenty of innuendo that will remind older listeners of an infamous Outhere Bros tune. The groove has a similar Eurodance feel to it and would go down very well in the North of England.

The squeaky hardcore stab sticks out strongly on DJ Please ‘RUN THE TRACK’, a kind of Moving Shadow circa 92 meets Eurodance/Footwork stompathon with cool sirens and outbursts of amen breaks.

Hot talent Polo Lilli contributes ‘Powda’ dives deep into the heart of the hardcore continuum with lush organ strings, a sultry vocal and a prominent call to action. This one’s a really clever tune that tweaks the formula of 91/92 rave tracks with a fresh twist.

Butt Rogers ‘Microwand’ gives a Juke makeover of another infamous mid 90s tune. Yes. we’re talking 20 Fingers for those who know sped up and switched to a soulful jazzy groove.

Tumult ‘Automate It’ brings it back to pounding Techno- the kind you hear legends like Amelie Lens play with a stripped back, bare bones aesthetic plus the vocals from Kicking In The Beat- winning combination!

and it sadly comes to a close with the scary intro of FOL Employee ‘Wellbeing Initiative’ and the resultant electro inspired swinging workout of melodic synths that follows.

While I’m not quite old enough to have experienced the proto rave era where Sasha, Slipmatt and Grooverider would all play at the same event- I have heard the tales of the fluidity of sound that preceded the splintered branches of today’s dance music. This compilation brings it back to the origin point of the hardcore continuum with 19 genre bending tracks you need to hear!!
