Track 1 of this fantastic EP instantly reminds me of the terror inducing Jungle tune Authorised Riddim ‘Split Personality.’Newkiller ‘U 92’ indeed features the blood curdling vocal sound from that very tune over thundering amens over what appears to be exorcism incantations and dark riffs plucked straight from the 92-94 darkside jungle template.
Gridzone ‘The Path’ opens with Horrercore chimes and Detroit strings before spiralling down a wormhole of classic Jungle breaks and bass booms in that stripped back atmospheric style that was a staple of Grooverider sets back in the day. This bad boy will conjure up memories of raving for some and wearing out mixtapes for those who were too young to go raving but the sound is perfectly distinguishable and perfectly executed.
Gold Soundz ‘I.Y.L.M.’ takes a more melodic route with uplifting, soulful pianos bouncing in perfect fusion to the rushing powerhouse amen breaks for some good times Junglism for feelgood ravers!
Midlife Crisis is ‘Here To Stay’ with a crate of G Funk samples, heavyweight bass notes and cut up amens in true 94/95′ style. 26/7 years on, the art of slicing the Winston Brother’s seminal break is still incredible, the drop that comes midway is an absolute joy and this track really does sound like a dubplate being spun at AWOL or World Dance!
