Toots & The Maytals – 54-46 Was My Number (Phibes Official Remix) [Jungle Cakes]

This is not just any Toot and The Maytals remix, this is an ‘official’ Drum and Bass remix of one of Toots and The Maytals biggest hits 54-46 Was My Number by two of our favourite producers, Phibes!

As it goes, the remix is something of a poignant one for the brothers because their dad is Toots & The Maytals biggest fan and because he practically had their music on repeat while the brothers were growing up, they had an early introduction as to what good music really sounded like and soon became massive fans themselves. During the time of writing and re-writing their remix, the sad news came through that Toots had sadly passed away, which hit them and most of the music world hard and in their own words:

“This remix then became almost impossible to finish due to pressure in our own minds to deliver something worthy. It honestly drove us a bit over the edge and we deleted various attempts. It was only when we reminded ourselves after having a chance meeting with him at Glastonbury a few years ago after playing a set after them, that Toots did his own thing, they were a band with raw power, their live set was amazing, we sat at the side of the stage in awe of the energy they still had decades into their career”.

Re-energised by their memories, they sat down and got to work on a brand new remix and as you can imagine with it being a DnB one, it is a far cry from the original when it comes to tempo, but the raw energy and power they soaked up at the side of the stage that day has all been channelled into creating a track that will still be tearing up dancefloors decades into their careers we’re sure. Centred around Toots’ distinctive vocal and eye-fuzzing Reese basses, Phibes do what they’ve been doing for a few years now and bring the fire! Out now on Jungle Cakes!
