V/A – Funk N’ Beats, Vol. 8: Curated by X-Ray Ted (BombStrikes)
The BombStrikes team have called on many legendary artists in the past to curate its flagship ‘Funk N’ Beats’ compilation series and because another legend was needed to seamlessly pass the baton to after it’d gone through the hands of artists such as Fort Knox Five, The Allergies, Smoove (of Smoove & Turrell) and Marc Hype amongst others, they knew just the man for the job, Bristol-based beatsmith, DJ and all-round top dude X-Ray Ted!
The decision to hand the baton to X-Ray Ted was made that bit easier because of superior knowledge of all things Funk, past and present, and should you ever choose to tune in to one of his Twitch streams, that becomes all too apparent very quickly indeed. With his curating cap on, X-Ray Ted set about putting his knowledge to good use to track down 23 of his favourite Funk cuts on the planet to feature on ‘Funk N’ Beats Vol. 8′ and just as we expected, he has made sure he’s covered every shade of excellent imaginable!
For those of you who prefer smoother and more mellow tones, you’ll more than likely appreciate the gorgeous groove and piano-rich sounds of Nautilus‘ jazzy ‘Root Down’ feat. Fleur Earth, Aldo Vanucci’s head-nod-inducing remix of Mr. Doris & D-Funk’s Hip Hop tune ‘All Down’ feat. N’fa Jones & Cantaloop and the sun-drenched feel of Alexander Norman’s summertime road-tripper ‘Flamingo’ feat. Dynamite MC. If your pallet preference is for something a little bolder, your attention will be caught by tracks like Fort Knox Five’s horn-heavy funker Reach feat. Flex Matthews, DJ Yoda’s equally horn-drenched and bassy ‘Back & Forth’ feat. A.Skillz & Izza Kizza, Bully’s hot-steppin’ edit of ‘Thing’ by The Fundamentals and Double Dee & Steinski’s 2021 remaster of their classic and sample-tastic Jazz.
Continuing with what is a colourful collection of Funk-driven sounds comes those that really pop and grab your attention no matter what! A few of those featured on the album do come from X-Ray Ted himself and you’ll find it difficult not to start strutting around to tracks like ‘Mirror Ball’, ‘Party Time’ and ‘Tribute To The Original Artform’. Also, watch out for The Traffic’s insanely brilliant and brass-toting ‘White Lines’ and the raucous energy of The Allergies’ party-poppin’ ‘Jumping Off’. With so many more amazing tracks to listen to, it’s fair to say X-Ray Ted has gone and smashed it! Funk on funky people.
Should you prefer to listen to ‘Funk N’ Beats Vol. 8′ as a continuous mix rather than track by track, either click through the player above or scroll down the Bandcamp page to find one that has been expertly compiled by X-Ray Ted.
